Our Inspiring Journey

The story behind "Pushing Through Waves" unfolds with an inspiring narrative of two remarkable para-athletes, Ajmal Samuel and Augustas Navickas, who redefined the limits of endurance sports. In 2019, they embarked on a historic journey as the first duo with disabilities to compete in the Hong Kong Around the Island Race, overcoming formidable challenges such as strong sea currents and towering waves. Their remarkable feat is chronicled in this documentary, capturing their unwavering spirit and determination. Through their journey, the documentary not only highlights their personal stories of resilience and triumph over adversity but also delivers a broader message of inclusivity and the potential for sports to break down barriers. Ajmal, paralysed in a road accident, refused to accept the limitations predicted by doctors and rose to become a national-level athlete. Meanwhile, Augustas, paralysed from a mountain biking accident, turned his focus to rowing, becoming a proud representative of Lithuania in international competitions. Their story illustrates how perseverance and grit can pave the way for groundbreaking achievements and inspire others to pursue physical and emotional well-being.

Why Create a Documentary?

The documentary "Pushing Through Waves" encapsulates the essence of overcoming barriers through determination and grit. Its broader message is to encourage inclusivity among all people, regardless of being able-bodied or with disabilities, professional or amateur, young or old, to embrace physical and emotional well-being for a healthier life.

Ajmal and Augustas believe that a high quality documentary film is the best way to tell their story of overcoming immense challenges. By capturing the Around the Island Race in an immersive format, they hope to convey their physical and mental tenacity in a way that draws viewers into their experience on the water. This documentary offers a unique perspective on their thrilling endeavour as the first PR1 para athlete pair to conquer the race in a double sculls boat. By sharing their story, they aim to prove that with the right attitude, anything is possible.
